The Great New Zealand Road Trip – Story Map

For the New Zealand Esri User Conference Story Map competition, I created a story map that takes you on a tourist sightseeing tour along New Zealand’s State Highway 1 from Cape Reinga to Bluff, highlighting the points of interest along the way.

You can check it out by clicking here.

Blog Update – August 2016

Hey guys, a few personal updates from me.

I will be giving talks at the GeoCart Cartography conference in Wellington at the end of August! I’ll be talking about creating the State Highway Metro Maps, procrastination mapping and my experiences as a student cartographer. I’ll also be giving a talk about my thesis topic: ‘Gaining Insights into Public Transport Passenger Satisfaction Using Crowdsourced Information’. Public speaking instills a lot of nerves, so fingers crossed it goes well! A big thanks to Land Information New Zealand for supporting my travel to GeoCart.

On a different note, I’ve heard that making commitments to goals publically provides much more motivation to actually achieve it. I’ve never really been satisfied with my ability to program in Python, so here I am; committing to an hour a day improving my Python programming (for those interested, I’m using Learn Python the Hard Way as a starting point).

Lastly, feel free to share any ideas for cool maps, as my procrastination mapping has reached an alarming low. Time for a new project I think!

Highways of Australia Metro Map

A decidedly non-kiwi map that goes against the name of this blog, but I’ll allow it! Following the great feedback I received for my New Zealand State Highway Metro Maps, here’s an Australian highway rendition in the same style of the London Underground.

A note about the highways and towns used – it would be difficult to include every single major road and town in Australia in the space available, so simplifications are made. That said, if you spot any spelling mistakes (you Australians have some strange place names!) feel free to point out any corrections!

Prints will likely be available in the near future so stay tuned!

Identify the city from the blank street map: Kiwi Edition!

The Guardian recently featured Gretchen Peterson’s City Maps: A Coloring Book For Adults (a pretty awesome piece of cartography!) with a quiz to guess the locations of global cities from a blank street map. New Zealand wasn’t featured sadly, so I decided to create my own kiwi rendition.

How well do you know the layouts of New Zealand’s cities and towns? See if you can identify the location of each of the fifteen blank colouring maps below.

Answers are at the bottom of the page. Good luck!

The North Island has a surprisingly large number of State Highways, which makes things a bit more crowded. Being a South Islander, I now know the North a lot better after working on this. Who knew there was a town called National Park?

Update: These maps were featured by the New Zealand Herald, Stuff.co.nz and M2 Magazine, and were included in the University of Otago’s Hockens Collection. I also appeared on Radio New Zealand’s Checkpoint program with John Campbell, you can watch the interview here.

I’ve also created an Australian map which you can check out here.

Old Style Banks Peninsula Terrain Map

Banks Peninsula Vintage Terrain Map v2-01

Click here for a larger version of the image.

This map shows how interesting the terrain that Banks Peninsula has, in a similar style to some of New Zealand’s earlier terrain maps, which I got the inspiration for after playing around with open elevation data. The difference here is that this one was created using only contours (no hillshade), lake and coastline features to represent it.

Location: Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand

Data: Contour line data for Banks Peninsula, New Zealand coastline, river and lake topo features from Koordinates/Land Information New Zealand

Tools: QGIS, Adobe Illustrator

Fonts: Century Modern

South Island Metro Map

I’m a big fan of the original London Tube map and other metro maps, so I created my own to show the South Island’s State Highway network in the same style, designed with topology and connections in mind rather than geographical accuracy. It was created to practice using Adobe Illustrator as it’s the first time I’ve used it, but I’m really happy with how it turned out as a really cool map.
